Cranberry growing season
During the spring we keep the bogs from freezing with irrigation and assess what needs to be done in the upcoming summer.
During the summer is when we build new bogs and repair old ones. The summer months are also when we have to mow the exterior of the bogs, weed the bogs, fertilize and spray the bogs, and prune them. Most of the equipment used on the bogs is very specialized, from boom mowers to specialty herbicide and pruning tractors. A good deal of the work is still done by hand though, such as weeding.
During the fall we start to harvest the berries. Most of our harvest is completed by walk behind machines that rake the berries off of the plants. Some of our bogs are open for hand harvesting. We also in the fall package and sell our berries. We sell most of our berries in 12 ounce bags to grocery stores, but we also supply wine makers and some other bulk accounts.
